SO
WHAT CAN ONE DO FROM HOME ?
You can turn your hobby into a money making
venture, you can be a freelance writer or web-designer,
or make use of those book-keeping skills or tax knowledge
to provide an annual service to SMEs ... if you think
about it, the possibilities are endless. What is most
important is to be prepared for the different , and often
distracting way of working and plan well before you embark
on your venture.
SO WHERE DO I
START?
First things first - find out if you need
to register your business with the Accounting
and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA).
All persons who conduct activities for
profit or gain must register their businesses. However,
there are some exceptions. If you fall within the following
categories, you need not register your business firm :
- A person holding a hawker's licence.
- A craftsman who conducts his work
at home, does not display his products and has no employees.
- A taxi driver.
- A trishaw rider.
- A sampan man.
- A farmer, a fish pond or prawn pond
keeper who does not have any employees, does not own
the land and does not charge any entrance fee.
- A statutory authority.
- An institution, society or person named
in the First Schedule, Income Tax Act.
- A registered society.
- A registered co-operative society.
- A registered mutual benefit organisation.
- A professional who provides his professional
services solely, such as a lawyer, doctor, accountant,
architect and engineer.
- A foreign company, which is registered
under the Companies Act, Cap 50 to carry on business
in Singapore.
- A company which is registered under
the Companies Act, Cap 50, and carries on business under
its registered name.
CAN I REALLY
WORK FROM HOME ?
Business activities may be conducted in
HDB flats, if the business qualifies under the Technopreneur
Home Office Scheme.
Premises other than your home intended
for the use of your business operations must have been
approved for the purpose under the Planning Act, Cap.
232. Approval for change of use must come from the Development
Control Division, Urban
Redevelopment Authority (URA).
If you wish to use your private residential
property to set up a Technopreneur Home Office (THO),
please ensure that your application is supported by the
Housing and
Development Board (HDB) and URA.
For enquiries, please contact:
1. HDB's Branch Office Service Line at Tel: 1800-8663030 or e-mail, cly2@hdb.gov.sg; or
2. URA’s Customer Service Hotline at Tel: 6223 4811 or e-mail, URA_CSO@ura.gov.sg
Other than setting up a THO, using of
HDB Flats as the registered office or place of business
is a serious breach of the Tenancy /Lease Agreement between
you and the Housing and Development (HDB).
