The world is moving into convenience shopping! Ecommerce is the reason the trend is here and picking up!
Please consider the following few data pertaining to ecommerce in ASIA:
1. eMarketer (claimed to be the world's leading provider of internet and e-business statistics) expects the region's internet users to increase from nearly 64 million in 2001 to 173 million by the end of 2004.
2. While B2C e-commerce growth is slow through much of the region, B2B e-commerce is already rapidly expanding in most Asian countries. Total B2B e-commerce revenues are expected to grow from $36.2 billion in 2000 to over $300 billion in 2004.
3. According to the World
Internet Usage and Population Statistics (updated
on 21 Nov 2005), the penetration of the Internet to Asia's
population is only 9.2%, although Asia has a 3.6b population,
taking up 56.4% of the world's population.
4. Translated into actual figures, the number of Internet users in Asia is around 332.5m. This number is only half, when compared to the rest of the world. The total growth of Asia internet users from 2000 to 2005 is only 34.2%, compared to the rest of the world at 65.8%. So there is much more room for growth.
5. Within ASEAN, growth rates from Year 2000 to Year 2005 range from 100% for Singapore to 2800+% for Vietnam.
In the Singapore case... In Nov 1998, it was reported the government of Singapore expects ecommerce to generate USD3b by 2002. They estimated that by the end of 1998, ecommerce transactions in Singapore will total USD150m. However, this did not take into account the prevailing economic factors.
According to IDC, Singapore's ecommerce
revenue is forecast to ... to reach US$42.7 million by
2008. Despite its relatively small size in the region,
Singapore’s ecommerce economy will remain extremely buoyant
in the 2003 to 2008 period. (For further reading, click

"There is no longer any doubt that by 2008 Asia's Internet market will have arrived. Whether measuring Internet users, buyers, or ecommerce Asia's growth rates are phenomenal and the percentage of Asia's population participating in the Internet economy continues to enlarge," says Nathan Midler, Asia/Pacific Research Manager, Internet Research, IDC Asia/Pacific.
